Never A Dull Moment

Well, as most of you know from Facebook and Instagram...things took a turn with my leg. And no, not a great one.

On Tuesday morning, I went to see my orthopedic doc and after one look at my leg, he said I would be taking a trip to the hospital to get an ultrasound on my leg. He told me what to expect if 1 or the other situation occurred.

Off to the hospital we went...the ultrasound was quite an experience. My leg was so swollen that it took 2 techs to try to get the images they needed (couldn't hardly see anything due to the swelling) and I had to roll over on my stomach so they could scan behind my knee (again the swelling was outrageous). The one tech told me, "Oh I knew you'd be staying with us for awhile when I saw you walk in."

Yep. I had MULTIPLE blood clots. Not just one. I had one massive clot and several smaller clots in my upper thigh. They aren't sure how I had arterial flow to my lower leg/foot, but I did. They called my doc (who was in surgery at the time) and he had me immediately admitted to the hospital.

I was escorted to my suite for the week. Blood thinners became the name of the game. I was admitted Tuesday afternoon and released Saturday morning. It was a LONG week.

My numbers are still not exactly where the doctors want them, but were to the level that they would accept in order to let me leave. I am taking an at-home injection and an oral medication. The injection will only last a few days (thank goodness...3 days worth is $400 generic), but the oral med will last for about 6 months. This situation has also caused other situations to arise. For example, I am no longer allowed to take my birth control, so now I need to make an appointment with my gynecologist to figure out what I can safely do as we are not in the baby making time of our lives.

I am now prone to bleeding and bruising. Boy oh boy...you should see my arms! I was the lucky one who got stuck for a blood draw every 6 hours while in the hospital, plus I had an IV for one of the meds. Fun, fun! My leg is still swollen, but getting better. Hopefully when the last of the clots disappear, the swelling will be able to drain and I'll be back to walking like a normal person!

Leg Update

As promised...here's an update on my leg.

At my 6 week appointment, doc told me I needed physical therapy. Why you ask? Well, my leg is still EXTREMELY swollen (Eric likes to say it looks like when the Nutty Professor turned into the fat man every time) and due to that, I have limited ankle and knee and sometimes hip motion.

I have completed my first week of PT. I go twice a week. They have done some electrical stimulation (which feels awesome) and dramatically reduces the swelling for the evening...but then the next day, it's right back to being like an elephant stump. Ugh.

I have around 5 more weeks of PT, but my 2 physical therapists are thinking I may need to see an OT and/or lymphatic specialist. I have exercises to do at home PLUS some stuff to try to open my lymph nodes to promote the swelling going down. I'm giving it my best effort, but so far no luck.

I just took this picture and you can see how much of a difference there is in my legs. The swelling extends into my thigh and it feels like it's so tight it'll bust. I am also wearing a compression sock on doc's orders. So joyous. NOT. I just want to get better!

4th of July

I know this is a little late, but I've been busy! Between my leg (update in the next post I write) and Scentsy Reunion (the last post I wrote), plus going back to work instead of working from home...I'm exhausted!

We had a pretty low key 4th of July day, but that weekend we had some time with my dad's side of the family. My cousins are like my siblings and their kiddos more like nephews/niece than cousins. Love them to pieces!

Here's some fun moments I wanted to remember...

mom sitting with her little buddy, Roxy (our friends' Yorkie)

Henry, Callie & Roxy entertaining Jen

Callie eating strawberries and sitting with Jenna

I think Henry had just "stole" Eric's heart and was trying to keep it away from him...too funny! (we always did the "got your nose" bit when we were little)

Henry & Callie getting Eric to lift them up...over...and over...and over ;)

at one point, I saw this small chunk of cake left on the table and thought...I'm gonna go have a piece (I'd had 1 small bite when we cut the cake)...I turned around and there was NOTHING left! needless to say, everyone loved the cake and cookies

the picture is how the property looked when I was growing up - it's my dad's family farm

All in all, we had a WONDERFUL day and couldn't have asked for anything better! So many plans changed along the way, but in the end....it was perfect. And as of today, 61 days of wedded bliss has treated us pretty well, even living through a broken leg! ha
